Journalist Zhao Yan, who was arrested this week in Shanghai, was also working as a researcher for the New York Times bureau in Beijing. He is accused of “revealing state secrets,” though it’s unclear so far whether his arrest is linked to his own journalism, which was critical of government policy, or to his work for the NYT. Some people have voiced suspicion that Zhao’s arrest is linked to the Times’ early reporting on Jiang Zemin’s decision to retire. Read today’s Times piece.
