China answers US criticism on HR

From the News International via East Asia News:

China denounced US criticism of its human rights record on Sunday in what has become a routine exchange of accusations and said the United States was guilty of double standards.

The US State Department marked International Human Rights Day on Saturday by cataloguing what it saw as human rights abuses around the world. “From Cuba to China, Belarus to Burma, Uzbekistan to Zimbabwe, and Iran to North Korea, courageous human rights activists remain harassed and imprisoned,” the US report said.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Qin Gang said the Chinese government and people had expressed strong opposition to the US criticism. “The United States itself has severe problems of violating human rights, and it is being strictly criticised by the international society as it refused the investigation of a special rapporteur of the UN Human Rights Commission,” Qin said on the Foreign Ministry Web site.
