They have been banned, censored, gagged and imprisoned. They have suffered, mentally and physically, for their art. But, as China has opened its arms to the West in the past 10 years, and relaxed its cultural stranglehold, Chinese artists’ fight for expression has finally paid off.
An emerging generation of YCAs – young Chinese artists – are now among the main players on the world art scene. Most started as painters, yet nearly all have switched to photography and video, as if only this instant medium is fast enough to capture the seismic shifts taking place in China. Most came from poor, provincial backgrounds to train in Beijing and Shanghai. Many are now millionaires, whose work can command up to ¬£20,000 a piece.
