Taiwan Says Bush Concessions to China Would Hurt U.S. Integrity – Bloomberg

Taiwan has warned U.S. President George W. Bush that any concessions to China over the island would risk damaging his nation’s foreign policy integrity.

China’s President Hu Jintao is likely to press President Bush to reiterate opposition to any move toward independence by Taiwan when the pair meets in Washington this week, analysts say. The U.S. has previously said it supports a “one China” policy while urging the two sides to find a peaceful solution.

“If we look at President Bush’s inaugural address last January and the State of Union address in February, it’s easily understandable that the American foreign policy is based on freedom and democracy,” said Joseph Wu, head of Taiwan’s Mainland Affairs Council. “If President Bush criticizes Taiwan when he meets Mr. Hu Jintao, I think it’s going to lead to questioning by the international community of the integrity
