Village teachers cry for help – Yulun Jiandu

From Yulun Jiandu, translated by CDT:

A group of teachers from a village school in Hengyang City of Hunan Province wrote a letter to Yulun Jiandu to seek help about their lack of funding and unpaid wages.

After several revisions to textbooks since May 2001, there has been no new facilities, no new book and no new audio or video materials in the school, even though the school has been paying up all sorts of tuitions and fees (facility fee 10 yuan/semester, book fee 5 yuan, teacher training fee 3 yuan, audio/video material fee 5 yuan, computer fee 25 yuan for 3- to 6-graders). Now teachers have returned to an old life of “one chalk teaches everything.”

Despite state regulations that teachers should be paid no less than civil servants, many teachers haven’t received their full salaries and benefits, while local government officials never miss a paycheck. More than a million yuan of teachers’ social security funds have disappeared and the persons in charge can’t explain what happened. [Full Text in Chinese]
