On June 20, 2006, the biggest corruption case in value in Anhui Province since the founding of the People’s Republic was tried at Xuancheng City Intermediate Court. On trial was Liu Junqing, former chairman of Shuanglun Group and former director of Bozhou City People’s Congress’ finance and economics committee.
After the investigation on Wang Huaizhong‘s corruption case in 2003, Liu once remarked in a meeting, saying “they cannot take me down even upholding huge flags. People in the Central Discipline Inspection Committee are humans, they need to eat, to spend cash, so I can handle them.”
I believe corrupt officials cannot buy over the Committee, and the Committee refuses to be done so. But, such an outrageous remark is alarm inspiring and thought provoking. [Full Text in Chinese]
This is similar to the remarks by Lai Changxing that “I don’t fear that officials don’t have hobbies.” But Liu’s defiance is more frightening as he had built a huge network of liased officials, from counties to cities to provinces and up. Handling the Committee is defying, but it’s more precise to say it’s the self-confidence of corrupt officials. In their eyes, handling the Committee is not a fantasy, to them it’s telling the truth.
