China calls for the ultimate sacrifice from its Olympics workforce – Peter Simpson

Wchina23Toiling through stifling summer heat in flimsy plimsolls, ragged clothes and hard hats, Beijing’s construction workers struggle round the clock to build a city worthy of the 2008 Olympic Games.

But as if dangerous working conditions and some of the lowest wages in the world were not enough to contend with, the legions of migrant labourers are now being asked to sacrifice their lives.

Among the many slogans hung around the huge Olympic Village to spur on the 2,000-plus workforce is a banner proclaiming: “The quality of work is more important than life”. The blue and white sign was hidden from public view during a recent visit by foreign journalists. [Full text]
