It’s funny how China banned “Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest” while looking the other way at the real threat to its 1.3 billion people.
No, this column isn’t a defense of Walt Disney Co.’s or Johnny Depp‘s right to make millions of dollars. The Burbank, California-based company and the actor make enough money. Nor are Chinese certain to benefit from watching the tale of pirates seeking treasure. After all, it was scenes of cannibalism that ran afoul of China’s censors.
Yet the decision not to let Disney’s latest flick play is rich in irony. While the government of Asia’s No. 2 economy doesn’t like cannibalism, rampant piracy is cannibalizing its development. [Full Text]
