International press associations urge China to free jailed journalist – Interfax

From Interfax:

The World Association of Newspapers and World Editors Forum, which represent 18,000 publications in 102 countries, have sent a letter to Premier Wen Jiabao calling for the immediate release of Li Yuanlong, who has received a two-year sentence for publishing an essay on democracy and freedom.

“We respectfully remind you that the jailing of Mr. Li is a clear breach of his right to freedom of expression, which is guaranteed by numerous international conventions, including the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. We urge you to take all necessary steps to ensure that in future your country fully respects international standards of freedom of expression.” [Full Text]
