CHINA’S former top leader Jiang Zemin was shocked that security agencies had failed to realise the threat posed by the Falun Gong spiritual movement until more than 10,000 practitioners surrounded Zhongnanhai, the leadership compound in the heart of Beijing, a new book reveals.
A three-volume set of selected reports, speeches and letters of Mr Jiang, issued this week ahead of his 80th birthday next week, includes an April 25, 1999, letter to China’s ruling body, the Politburo Standing Committee, in which Mr Jiang expressed his shock at the rise of Falun Gong and warned of “the arrival of a sensitive period”.
