CPC Ends the Meeting Without Mentioning Chen Liangyu

The Chinese Communist Party ended its sixth plenary session meeting on Wednesday in Beijing without mentioning Chen Liangyu and the Shanghai pension fund scandal that brought him down.

This is surprising as before the meeting, it was widely expected that Hu Jintao would announce the sentence on Chen. The meeting also shied away from announcing party personnel reshuffles.

Taiwan’s United Daily reported that there are two reasons why Chen was not mentioned. First, the pension fund scandal implicated too many people and was very complicated. The full investigation will take longer. Second, Hu Jintao wants to hold Chen as his leverage against the Shanghai Gang, so that in the next Party meeting, Hu can make personnel arrangements in his own favor.
