There are about 30 wrongful convictions in China each year due to confessions extracted by police torture, but the number of unreported cases is likely higher, state media reported Monday, citing an official.
Wang Zhenchuan ” vice procurator-general of the Supreme People’s Procuratorate, China’s highest prosecutor’s office ” said on average 30 unjust verdicts are handed down annually because of confessions obtained through torture, the official Xinhua News Agency reported. [Full text]

Wang Zhenchuan, Deputy Procurator-General of the Supreme People’s Procuratorate, said illegal interrogation exists in some extent in local judicial practice. “Nearly every wrongful verdiction in recent years is involved in illegal interrogation,” he said.
