China Protests Taiwan President’s U.S. Stopover – Reuters

China accused Taiwan’s president of trying to damage Sino-U.S. ties with a stopover in California on the way to Central America on Monday and criticized Washington for giving the brief visit permission.

President Chen Shui-bian leaves for Nicaragua on Monday to attend the inauguration of president-elect Daniel Ortega, stopping en route in San Francisco.

Chen will meet privately with Raymond Burghardt, chairman of the American Institute in Taiwan, the group responsible for U.S.-Taiwan relations in the absence of formal diplomatic ties. [Full Text]
