The name Tiananmen Square conjures up either the memory of a slaughter of hundreds of pro- campaigners by the Chinese authorities on 4 June 1989, or denial by the Chinese authorities that it happened.

Mentioning 4 June 1989 is still prohibited in the Chinese media and the Chinese government maintains that it responded “appropriately” to organised rebellion.
