China Says Organs from Prisoners Used Only in Exceptional Cases – AP

From AP, via The New York Times:

…Human rights groups have said China’s transplant business is profit-driven with little regard for medical ethics, and that many organs ” including those transplanted into wealthy foreigners ” come from executed prisoners who may not have given their permission…

Chinese transplantation specialists have estimated as much as 99 percent of transplanted organs come from executed prisoners, according to a report by Amnesty International last year…

Amnesty International says China executed at least 1,770 people in 2005 ” about 80 percent of the world’s total. China has not revealed the number of executions it carries out. [Full Text]
