China Sentences Canadian to Life Term – Audra Ang

A Chinese court on Thursday sentenced a Canadian activist to life in prison for alleged terrorist links, delivering a ruling that could ratchet up political tensions between China and Canada.

Huseyin Celil was sentenced for the two crimes of “separating China” and “organizing, leading and participating in terrorist groups, organizations,” Foreign Ministry spokesman Liu Jianchao said without elaborating. ..

Earlier this week, the son of prominent U.S.-based Chinese Muslim activist Rebiya Kadeer was sentenced to nine years in prison on subversion charges in Xinjiang. Ablikim Abdureyim confessed to charges of “instigating and engaging in secessionist activities,” Xinhua said.
