Glaciers Gradually Shrinking at Alarming Rate – Xinhua

Glaciers in China have shrunk by 3,248 square kilometers in the past 40 years, according to a new analysis.

The area of glaciers has shrunk by 5.5 percent since the 1960s and the volume has dwindled by 389 cubic kilometers, about seven percent of the total 40 years ago, the report said.

The analysis is based on information in the newly established database, which compiles 24 years of field studies by the Cold and Arid Regions Environmental and Engineering Research Institute under the Chinese Academy of Sciences. [Full Text]
