Politics are Taboo in China’s Virtual World – AP

AP reports on a new virtual world being created for the Chinese market:

Under the new deal, MindArk will train artists from Cyber Recreation Development, which is backed by the Beijing city government, to create a Chinese planet within Entropia Universe by August 2008.

News of the new computer program sparked some media speculation in Hong Kong that China’s lack of Western-style civil liberties will extend to the virtual online world, but Liu dismissed fears that Chinese authorities will limit free speech online.

Asked about potential censorship of user chats, Liu said “the government won’t censor commercial transactions between users,” adding that the site would avoid politics. [Full text]
