Provinces throughout the Huai River basin have failed to control the dumping of waste into the river, according to the results of a study recently published by the Ministry of Water Resources’ Huai River Committee. Prepared for an NPC team in charge of environmental review, the report gives a failing grade to the country’s ten-year effort to curb pollution in the Huai.
The total volume of COD, or chemical oxygen demand, discharged into the river last year was 852,000 tons, 1.35 times larger than targets set in a “goal report” by the river committee. Henan was the worst polluter. Shandong Province was the greenest, but still dumped almost double the limit suggested by another, stricter set of Ministry standards. [Full Text in Chinese]
