Ruling Party In Taiwan Flexes Muscles – Kathrin Hille

Taiwan’s ruling party is trying to force its presidential candidate, Frank Hsieh, to commit himself to a more radical pro-independence line, limiting his flexibility to pursue a less confrontational relationship with China.

The Democratic Progressive party‘s central executive committee on Thursday backed a resolution that demands Taiwan should adopt a new constitution and change its name “as soon as possible” and conduct referendums to “highlight that Taiwan is a sovereign independent country”. [Full Text]
