Top 10 List Boards Flood China’s Internet

Recently, a lot of Top 10 list boards have appeared in the Chinese media. One that has attracted a lot of attention is China’s Top 10 Universities for Single Male/Female Students list released by the so-called China Singles Association(CSA)/‰∏≠ÂõΩÂÖâÊ£çÂç艺ö.

CSA said through telephone interviews and online surveys that they make their own lists. However, the universities on the lists are selected for too obvious reasons. Most universities that are strong in science and engineering, such as University of Science and Technology of China and Tsinghua University, have more male students and are listed on the Top 10 Universities for Single Male Students list. Most universities that emphasize arts and music, such as the National Film Academy and Central Pedagogy College of Music and Fine Arts, which have more female students, are listed in the Top 10 Universities for Single Female Students list.

Many netizens have questioned the the credibility of CSA.

Xinmin.Net checked with the National Administrative Ministry and confirmed that CSA is not a legally registered association. Xinmin.net also interviewed the founder of CSA, Yao Peng, who admitted that CSA is more of a dating site, like Match.com. It was so named to attract more netizens. Yao said that he just started the business and runs it in a very modest way. However, the activities CSA promotes are pretty vibrant, such as “10,000 Singles Match Festival“, and a competition for “National Singles Day of November 11th“.

When information and online public opinions are introduced by the internet and blogs in China, false information, commercialization, and satire are often promoted. Besides CSA’s singles board, there are some ridiculous one like “China Universities’ Virgin Ratings Board” which is not geared toward commercial use but just toward China’s unhealthy male chauvinism.

Back to the top 10 lists–How many of them we can verify? When the top 10 rich list and top 10 author rich list became news headlines, should we have questioned those numbers and names?
