Taiwan President Chen Shui-bian said Tuesday that the United States is caving in to Chinese pressure and disregarding democratic values by opposing the island’s referendum on its attempt to join the U.N.
Chen’s remark was the latest in a volley of verbal spars between Taipei and its ally Washington over the referendum, which the U.S. worries could stoke tension between Taiwan and rival mainland China.
U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice has called Taiwan’s attempts “provocative.” [Full Text]
