The subversion trial against activist Hu Jia started in Beijing today. Because it was a closed trial, details of the proceedings are few and far between. From the International Herald Tribune:
At the trial Tuesday, Hu spoke little as his lawyer presented his case. His wife was listed as a prosecution witness but was barred from attending the trial. However, she and Hu’s mother were allowed to meet with him afterwards.
Prosecutors were not available after the trial for comment. But Li, the defense lawyer, said prosecutors described writings by Hu as threatening state security.
“We have a major dispute on how to interpret Chinese law,” Li said. “We hope the court will give him a just verdict and give him freedom.”
