Photos: Driving Luxury Cars to Protest CNN
According to CNN: “About 1,500 pro-Chinese demonstrators gathered outside CNN’s bureau in Los Angeles on Saturday, demanding that a commentator apologize and be fired from the network over comments critical of China and the U.S. government’s relationship with it. Protesters gathered at CNN’s bureau in Los Angeles, California, to demand the firing of Jack Cafferty.”
But photos are spreading on the Chinese Internet, showing that among those protesters, a few apparently showed up in luxury cars. It has been an open secret that many Chinese officials and nouveau riches sent their children to study in the US, and many of these young students live a lifestyle that is more luxurious than their Chinese peers. While we don’t know who these protesters are, their photos have already generated not-so-flattering comments inside of China, as the few comments below translated by CDT show. The following photos and comments are from bbs.enoya.com and other Chinese blogs, showing some protesters in Los Angeles:

Comments from netizens in bbs.enoya.com:
* “‘Patriotic action’ in a race car, what style!”
* “I took a careful look at these photos. I noticed those cars American drive. sigh…..”
* “If you want us to love our country, our country better be lovable.”
* “How can this guy not love the [Chinese] government?!”
* “China is theirs. How can they not love it?”

How do you know that they are from China They could be from Hongkong or Taiwan or even American Born Chinese So just because they are Waving the Chinese Flag doesn’t mean They are necessarily from China. I believe this one of your hatchet job to insinuate that they must be the children of corrupt official I am disappointed at your one sided view Specially this website is giving so much prominent to Anti China writer when nobody is hearing them or They could be the most obscure writer. in other words professional whiner that nobody hear except they are pandering to western sentiment
Right!
My former roomate must be one of those child of corrupt Chinese officials and officials and nouveau riches. He drives a nice sports car that he could hardly afford.
Except that he is White and took on huge credit card debt to pay for his little toy.
Chinese netizens can be forgiven if they never lived in LA do not understand the lifestyle here.
It’s an image thang. It’s Hollywooood, baby!
Chinese netizen can also being forgiven for being ignorant of the large and wealthy Chinese community in Greater LA area.
There is a little wealthy enclave outside LA, called San Marino. It’s being dubbed Chan Marino for obvious reasons.
While few might indeed be corrupted officials and family but to imply that most rich Chinese in LA are in some way connected to corrupted money in China is just being ignorant.
Corruption in China? I’m shocked, shocked.
There are hundreds of thousand native born Chinese in Canada and the US who are here soley as depositories of wealth, legal and otherwise, stripped, legal and otherwise, from China’s economy.
It isn’t new it isn’t recent. In the run-up to the reversion of Hong Kong to China there were many, many stories that made the case there were billions of dollars fleeing to the US and Canada.
Now that China is the purest example of captialism (one party state or not) no one should be surprised that corruption is rampant.
Look at the US and the last twenty years in what was supposed to be the model of transparency and open and honest markets.
Corruption is one of the fingers on the much vaunted invisible hand of the market.
SHANGHAI, China (AP) — China’s official Xinhua News Agency says a former Shanghai Communist Party boss has decided not to appeal his 18-year jail sentence for corruption.
The news agency says Chen Liangyu did not meet Monday’s deadline to appeal.
Chen, who was also a member of China’s powerful Politburo, is the highest-ranking Chinese official to be ousted in a decade. He was convicted earlier this month of taking bribes, lending large amounts of money from the city’s pension fund and helping businessmen buy stakes in state-owned companies.
His lawyer had earlier indicated that Chen would appeal.
AND TODAY FROM asianews.it
Beijing (AsiaNews/Agencies) – The trial of Zeng Jinchun, the former head of the Communist Party’s Discipline Inspection Commission in Chenzhou (Hunan province), began yesterday. He is accused of unlawfully amassing 31.52 million yuan (US$ 5 million) between 1997 and 2006 when he was responsible for all assessments and approvals for mining licences within the city’s jurisdiction.
“The most corrupted disciplinary secretary in China” is what the indictment papers said about his. He, along with his wife, son and daughter, is alleged to have taken bribes from 45 people who wanted construction contracts, mine contracts, career promotions and help in resolving disputes. He also stockpiled wealth by meddling in the legal proceedings of economic cases.
Press reports indicate that Wang Wenhan, a Chenzhou entrepreneur, paid him 60,000 yuan to oil the wheels of justice in Yizhang County Court in a dispute with another company.
“When his demand was not met, he ordered the detention of four top officials from the court, including the court president,” Wang said. “As a result, the acting head of the court sent me a court verdict very quickly. According to the verdict, I won more than 1.7 million yuan in compensation from the opposing company,” Wang added.
Corruption, especially at the local level, is one of China’s main problems despite attempts by Chinese leaders to enforce ‘zero tolerance.’
For some analysts the centralised system of government, which recognises little or no autonomy to judges and administrators, favours abuses of the type.
