Haidian District’s ‘Ethnic Problem’

From a recent post on the A post-80 Uighur Refugee blog (translated by CDT):

Translation of notice posted in Haidian District:

Urgent Notice

Hostels and bath houses in this district:

In accordance with the sub-bureau’s request, inspection is already underway of hostels and bath houses in the Haidian District that are housing Tibetans and Uighurs. A concerted effort has to be made to verify the identification of all such people who check in; in addition, the local police station should be notified.

Also, hotels and bath houses should pay special attention when checking in guests as to whether or not they are ethnic minorities, and they should accurately record this information.

Any Tibetan or Uighur living here, report to the police station immediately.

From the blog:

What does this photo make you think about?

Refugees? Discrimination? State terrorism? A vicious circle? Authoritarian rule? The invisible man? The invisible race? Low morale? Ethnic cleansing? A cultural attack? Cultural suppression? Uighars identity crisis? Safeguarding people’s legal rights? Racial dignity and identity? Self protection? A segregated society? Trust crisis? Ethnic conflict?

It makes some people — myself included — think of South African apartheid.

Update: High Peaks Pure Earth blog picked up on this at the end of September, with more information about the source of the photo.
