Ai Weiwei: The Numbers, Updated
Ai Weiwei continues to blog about “The Numbers,” his project to record the names of the students that died during the Sichuan Earthquake.
In this posting, the first section is a volunteer’s experience in the town of Shifang; the volunteer went to record the names of the deceased children and talk to their parents. During the earthquake, 11 students and one teacher were killed; the school had three stories and the top story collapsed, crushing the rest. One teacher the volunteer interviewed said that, even before the earthquake, the school as very poor; the parents had to provide desks for the students in the classrooms, and the teacher also had to purchase the teacher’s own desk.
The second section, by volunteer Zhao Ying, is about the request to retrieve the project’s research materials that were seized by the police; a diary, two notebooks, other data, and a digital camera card. The volunteer brought the PRC penal code to show the police officer, a code that states that the police are only allowed to hold the items for three days, but had already had them for a month. The officer said that materials were still being held by he police and told the volunteer to return at a later date.
