Li gained notoriety after he told the crowd after the accident, “My father is Li Gang!”, referring to his father’s position as deputy director of the public security bureau in the city where they live. Another student as injured in the accident. AFP reports:
Family members of the pedestrian who was killed were then reportedly told to stop talking about the case, after receiving compensation of 460,000 yuan ($70,000).
Chen Lin, the victim’s brother, has, however, told the official Global Times newspaper he fears Li Qiming will not be punished according to law, “considering Li’s family background”.
“My family and myself want justice. The prosecution itself demonstrates that,” Chen was quoted as saying by Xinhua news agency.
The family of the other victim, who suffered a broken leg, received 92,000 yuan from the Li family, Xinhua reported.
Prosecutors asked for a jail sentence of three years and seven months, while the defence asked for a three-year sentence with a reprieve, arguing that Li Qiming had shown remorse.
A verdict will be delivered at a later date, Xinhua said.
