The Kidney Trade Network

Southern Weekend reports on the widespread organ trade network in China, which connects the black market practices to standard hospitals across regions. An excerpt, translated by CDT:

Hunan resident Hu Jie and Dongbei resident Shen Yun both lost a kidney. Their kidneys were removed for speedy transplants at standard hospitals. During their kidney removal processes, both had been subject to the same kinds of enticement, threats, and restraints.

What they encountered was an organ trade network that spanned China — underground intermediaries, illicit influence, in concert with regular hospitals and workers participating in the midst of it all. Each performed its own duties, and the operations were highly efficient.

After the police filed a case, organ trade intermediaries quickly disappeared, and the involved hospitals responded: “These are the actions of individual nurses.”
