Hexie Farm (蟹农场): Chinese Little Red Riding Hood

For the latest installment in his CDT series, cartoonist Crazy Crab of Hexie Farm again draws inspiration from classic fairy tales to comment on current events in China. This week’s cartoon uses the image of Little Red Riding Hood, who was famously hoodwinked, and devoured, by a big bad wolf masquerading as her sick grandmother. Little Red Riding Hood is depicted holding a torch of freedom, while the wolf’s hood is adorned with the hammer and sickle. This cartoon references recent comments by incoming president Xi Jinping, in which he called on the Party to accept “sharp criticism.” While some observers took his comments to show a more tolerant attitude toward dissent, many others expressed skepticism.
