Badiucao (巴丢草):The Raft of the Medusa 2013

Badiucao (巴丢草):The Raft of the Medusa 2013

For his final CDT cartoon of 2013, Badiucao revisits many of the major stories from the year in one drawing, which shows images from Bo Xilai’s trial, the crackdown on Internet speech, dead pigs, Tibetan self-immolations, and more. The title alludes to a painting from 1818-19 by French painter Théodore Géricault, which depicted the aftermath of the wreck of a French naval ship Méduse (the Medusa). The accident became a public scandal when the French captain and the monarchy under which he was operating were blamed for the disaster.
