Leftist Website Apparently Shut Down [Correction]

The leftist website Haijiang Online (海疆在线) has been shut down. Chinese Internet users first noticed that the site was down on January 31, although as of the publication of this article the mobile site and Weibo account are still live. The domain name haijiangzx.com is currently in “clientHold” status, which ICANN defines as “an uncommon status that is usually enacted during legal disputes, non-payment, or when your domain is subject to deletion.”

Haijiang Online’s latest Weibo posts are mostly terse comments on other posts—often nothing more than an emoticon. Original posts from 2014 give a better sense of why the site may have been targeted by censors: the editors elegize Maoism and write about politically sensitive topics such as the Hong Kong protests of last fall and color revolutions.

American Base to “Overthrow Hong Kong” Revealed: Scheme to Foment “Color Revolution”—The U.S. is using an “NGO” for subversive activities. A number of public figures say the U.S. is scheming to bring the experience of an Eastern European “color revolution” to Hong Kong, and that their activities are considerably dangerous. Why Do Xi Jinping and His Top Advisor Always Emphasize Class?—After the 18th Party Congress, Xi Jinping and his high-level advisor Wang Weiguang have time and again emphasized scientific socialism and class struggle, backgrounded by the threat of color revolution and the troublemaking tendencies of some private enterprise. Several of Haijiang Online’s Weibo posts are archived on FreeWeibo.

On a Tianya BBS forum thread titled “Was the Patriotic, Positive Energy Website ‘Haijiang Online’ Blocked?” (爱国正能量网站“海疆在线”被封了?), users speculate that the Haijiang “didn’t have the money to love the country” (没钱爱国了) or that it is undergoing “vacation-style therapy.”

Another leftist online forum, Utopia (乌有之乡), was shut down in April 2012, around the same time as when the investigation of former Chongqing Party secretary Bo Xilai began. Utopia bloggers continued to support Bo. While the site was shuttered, the homepage read, “Notice: Even if we are shut down or blocked, Utopia will always support Bo Xilai!!!” [Chinese] Utopia still exists at its original domain name, wyzxwk.com, as a “web magazine” (网刊).

Correction: This article previously stated that Haijiang has been shut down before. There is no evidence that this is the case.
