Drawing the News: Chinapoly

Rebel Pepper responds to Wednesday’s explosion at a Tianjin port warehouse by reimagining the board game Monopoly with a Chinese twist: On every space, the players must draw a Chance card and see what fate has in store for them.

Rebel Pepper explains:

This piece is about the Tianjin explosion, but is also an observation of recent years. More and more netizens feel China is entering a “random death” survival mode, and in such an environment no one can feel any guarantee of personal safety. It seems that anyone could die at any moment from disasters brought about by the government’s lack of control over society, for example, shipwrecks, elevator accidents, industrial pollution and explosions. Life in China has become a game of survival. To exaggerate slightly, people are not sure they will see the sun rise tomorrow. The cartoon turns the globally popular, classic board game Monopoly into a Chinese game of death.
