被XX (bèi x): bei-X
In Chinese, the grammatical construction bei-X, means that one was compelled to do X. Netizens have coined a number of terms using this construction that have become widely adopted.
- 被代表 (bèi dàibiǎo): bei-represent
- If one is "bei-represented" then the government is providing only the appearance of representation without the genuine substance of representation. The term came into use in December 2009 when the city of Ji'nan held a conference to discuss water utility fees. Netizens suspected that the "representatives" present (who supported the fee increase) were government plants and were not there to represent the interests of the people.

- 被自杀 (bèi zìshā): bei-suicide
- If one is bei-suicided, one is compelled to commit suicide. For example, the term bei-suicided has been used in connection to the recent spate of suicides at the Foxconn electronics factory. Poor working conditions have been speculated to be a cause of those suicides.

- 被增长 (bèi zēngzhǎng): bei-increased
- This term was coined by netizen Xia Yucai, who expressed disbelief at a government report showing that average wages had increased.

- 因对国家统计局最新公布的居民收入增长数据表示不解,2009年7月29日,一位叫“夏余才”的网友在某大网站的博客上,发明了一个“被增长”的新词。意指实际收入并未增加却在国家统计局那里‘被增长’了。使我们都被统计数字‘幸福’地笼罩着。
- 被墙奸 (bèi qiángjiān): bei-GFW
- Bèi qiángjiān sounds the same as "to be raped" in Chinese. However, the characters are different; the first character, 强 (meaning "by force") is replaced by the character 墙 (meaning "wall"). Thus, the new term means that one has been screwed by the wall, meaning the Great Firewall. An example of this term being used is in the following fictional error message (found here):
- 404错误! 404 Error!
