Dr. Jiang Yanyong’s fate

I have just mentioned Dr. Jiang Yanyong at Many2Many, and now received this email from an old friend, Alan Gleitsman. Alan said in his email:

” Dr. Jiang Yanyong, a 72 year-old Chinese military surgeon and never a dissident in any conventional sense, has been apprehended by the Chinese government and, his family fears, may be charged with subversion.

On April 10, 2003, as SARS was sweeping throughout Asia and the Chinese government was minimizing its existence and promoting domestic tourism, Dr. Jiang’s announcement that the disease was widespread forced the government to admit the extent of the epidemic and move more aggressively to contain it.

On February 24, 2004, in a letter to the National People’s Congress, he urged the Communist Party to admit and resolve the errors it committed that resulted in the tragic deaths in Tiananmen Square in 1989 and that the June 4th student movement be reappraised as a patriotic movement.

On June 1, 2004, en route to the U.S.Embassy for a visa to visit their daughter in the United States, Dr. Jiang and his wife were apprehended. His wife has since been returned home, but officials have collected Dr. Jiang’s razor and dentures, signifying that his release is not imminent.

…I hope that you will do what you can to urge the release of Dr. Jiang.”

Yes, we should do all what we can to urge the release of Dr. Jiang.
