CIC: Cheng Yizhong honored with press freedom award

From the China Information Center:

Source in China said Cheng Yizhong, former editor-in-chief of the Southern Metropolis and Xin Jing Bao (Beijing News), received a phone call from the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) on April 5, telling him he had won the 2005 UNESCO/Guillermo Cano World Press Freedom Prize. Chen said in the phone conversation that he felt honored for this award.

Source also said the awarding ceremony would be held in South Africa in late May. It is not known whether Cheng will attend the ceremony. “It’s a pity that two of my colleagues are still in prison”, said Cheng in the phone call, “they have lost their freedom”.
