China sticking to its story on envoy’s death – The Daily Yomiuri

Although the Foreign Ministry has strengthened counterespionage measures for diplomats posted overseas following the bitter lesson it learned from the suicide of an official at the Japanese Consulate General in Shanghai, Japan and China remain at odds over what really happened to him.

The Japanese side insists that the official was blackmailed by Chinese authorities in a bid to make him hand over confidential information, while China denies any involvement in the case. There is no immediate prospect of a diplomatic settlement between the two countries over the issue.
