China growth outlook rosy despite curbs – Reuters

Recent government curbs on credit and investment and a possible slowdown in the United States are unlikely to damage China’s long-term growth outlook, a senior central bank official said on Wednesday.

Tang Xu, head of the central bank’s research bureau, painted a rosy picture for the world’s fourth-largest economy, which the the bureau recently forecast would grow 10.3 percent in the first half of 2006 over a year earlier and 10 percent for the whole of the year.

“The momentum behind China’s economy remains relatively strong and I personally believe any significant slowdown is unlikely to occur this year,” Tang told Reuters in an interview. [Full Text]
