China police boss warns of rising instability – Reuters

China’s police chief said the country faces rising conflict and crime as market-driven growth tears away old controls, a government Web site reported on Monday.

Public Security Minister Zhou Yongkang(公安部部长周永康)issued the warning during a recent tour of central Hunan province, an epicenter of rural protest in past years.

“Our country’s economic and social development is in a period of rare and important strategic opportunities, but also of striking internal conflicts among the people, high crime rates and complex struggles against foes,” Zhou said, according to the official central government Web site (www.gov.cn).
