New Rules But No Brakes for China’s Economy – Li Qiyan and Zhang Huanyu


The world has been watching this year as statistic after statistic riveted attention on a red-hot economy in China that some think may be close to burning out of control. Now attention is shifting to decisions for handling the situation issued by the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC) , which directs and plans the nation’s economy.

Will China tighten controls? The NDRC’s mid-year meeting at the end of July provided some clues. Contrary to expectations, news from the four-day conference indicated new controls are coming in areas of energy use, emissions control and regional development. [Full Text]
