China To Spend 14 Billion Dollars On Polluted Lake Clean-up – AFP

China will invest more than 14 billion dollars to clean up its third-largest freshwater lake, which has been devastated by the unchecked waste from thousands of factories, state media said Friday.

Over the next five years, east China’s province will spend 108.5 billion yuan (14.4 billion dollars) on improving the quality of the water in the Taihu Lake and nearby tributaries, the Beijing News reported.

The situation in Taihu lake, once renowned for its scenic beauty, came to a head in late May when an algae bloom contaminated water supplies for several days for more than 2.3 million people in the nearby city of Wuxi. [Full Text]
