China Loses Olympic Bronze Medal From 2000 for Underage Gymnast

The International Olympic Committee has determined that a Chinese gymnast was ineligible to compete in the 2000 Olympics and stripped the team of a Bronze medal, awarding it to the United States instead. From Bloomberg:

The International Gymnastics Federation conducted an inquiry, which found that Dong Fangxiao was 14 years old when she competed at the 2000 Games. Olympic rules require a gymnast be at least 16 years old in the year of the Games.

The ruling body for gymnastics disqualified her from all six events in which she participated in Sydney, including the women’s team event.

The eligibility questions arose during the 2008 Olympics in Beijing, where the International Gymnastics Federation also investigated the age of He Kexin, who won gold medals for China in the team event and the uneven bars. That probe found that she was old enough to compete.
