Hexie Farm (蟹农场): The River of Pigs

For the latest installment in his CDT series, cartoonist Crazy Crab of Hexie Farm visits recent news of more than 3,000 dead pigs found floating in the Huangpu River outside Shanghai. While the cause of the pigs’ death is not yet known, in Crazy Crab’s treatment they are floating in a toxic political environment, an allusion to the National People’s Congress meetings now underway in Beijing. In Crazy Crab’s view, the problems of environmental degradation, weak government regulation, and lack of transparency do not exist on their own, but as part of a larger, poisonous political environment. Among the porcine victims of this toxic sludge is “reform.”
