Hexie Farm (蟹农场): Torches

For his latest contribution to the Hexie Farm CDT series, cartoonist  honors of the memory of June 4, 1989. In his cartoon, three torches reach up and catch alight an image of a fire extinguisher in . Recently fire extinguishers have been placed around the Square to pre-empt any self-immolation protests, following the self-immolation of more than 100 Tibetans in various regions. This fire extinguisher, placed in the position of Mao Zedong’s portrait, also represents the power of the Communist Party. During the 1989 protesters, a statue titled Goddess of Democracy, holding a torch of freedom, was erected in Tiananmen Square.
