China is one of the oldest and most civilized cultures in the world. Why would such an amazing culture stiffle anyone’s freedom of speech or their right to create or have an opinion. The Ministry of Culture needs to take a long hard look at what is best for China in the long run. And that is freedom.

Shame on the Chinese regime for their imprisonment of this courageous artist. You are a disgrace to all of your ancestors who fought tirelessly for freedom, only for you, their unworthy and ungrateful heirs to trample on it. The fact that you resort to childish cyber attacks to silence your opponents overseas shows how spineless you are. If you want to pick a fight with the world, why not try using the same tactics you use against your own people and see how far you get.

The human spirit cannot be confined. Any government that tries to confine it via traditional political repression, the arbitrary exercise of state power to target individuals who express their opinions, is either evil or stupid. In the case of China the persistent behaviour pattern suggests that both descriptions apply to those in positions of power. I hope the Chinese people express their collective wisdom via a change of government soon. If other ethnicities can do it, so can they!

I am a great admirer of Chinese culture. My company has an office in China, employs local people, does much business there, and I visit frequently. This sort of treatment is what you would expect from the days of the tyrant Mao, and not from a great country taking its rightful place among the civilised nations. Confucian philosophy would say that a government which cannot take criticism is not fit to govern, and who am I to argue with that?

Honor your artists, don’t dishonor yourselves. A man’s conscience is his own, it does not belong to you. This is something it seems all governments, including my own, have a problem understanding.
