Wednesday 13th April 2011

Dear Ambassador Fu Ying, I was very disturbed to hear on the BBC Radio Four programme Today about the arrest and detention of Mr. Ai Weiwai. I know that your country, as indeed the United Kingdom, upholds the principle that all men are innocent until proven guilty. The arrest of Mr. Ai Weiwai puts your country and particularly its administration in a very poor light when Mr. Weiwai’s family and legal representation are not informed of the substance of the charges that have been made against him. It took great courage for Mrs. Ai Weiwai to speak out and I hope that the authorities in China will not now take punitive measures against a wife who wants to have information about her husband. Your country commands great respect in the world for its intellectual energy, initiative and financial success. The treatment of Mr. Ai Weiwai threatens to eclipse these highlights as a result of its action against this remarkable gentleman. Please could you use your considerable influence to ensure that Mr. Ai Weiwai’s family is given the necessary information so that his fundamental right to a free and open trial is upheld.

Yours sincerely,

Henry Beltran

No one knows exactly what the future holds, however, it certainly benefits us all to encourage the strong creative thinking and problem solving skills that the future will require. By presenting good role models from diverse cultural groups, we guide young people toward a successful future and give them hope. We know that our young people hold the future in their hands, and that they will be better prepared to step up and meet the challenges of the future if they are encouraged to be open minded and co-operative. – ndp

Artists and writers are independent-minded creatures and throughout human history have challenged the confining, restrictively conformist principles of governments and those in positions of power. The arrest and detention of Ai WeiWei is proof that he spoke unwavering truth to the murderous, absolutist, totalitarian regime in modern neo-capitalist China, and has suffered greatly for it. As a fellow citizen of the world, I demand his immediate release and that he be and allowed to travel, speak and create without interference from those who fear his tireless message of human dignity and freedom. In America millions are demanding the same freedom for Bradley Manning, a young man wrongfully arrested because he also challenged the murderous militarist regime in our country.

In a sad coincidence I had seen a documentary about Al Weiwei about a week before I heard that he had been arrested and disappeared by the Chinese government. I had not heard of him before that. He exuded remarkable energy and inspiration even thru the TV screen. This is terrible news. I hope the Chinese government comes to recognize that it can’t be considered a legitimate member of the international arts community if it arbitrarily arrests and hides one of China’s most creative artists. He’s an artistic genius and a really kind man. He’s a Chinese treasure and they should be proud of him, not bury him in jail. Cmon, China, your a world power. Act like it.

The Chinese government needs to realize that an artist such Ai Weiwei projects an aura of culture, artistry, and individual creative imagination for all of the people of China. By silencing Ai Weiwei the Chinese government will NOT silence his message, rather it will only ignite a wildfire by creating a martyr of this humble man. Release Ai Weiwei immediately, and restore his human rights at once!
