长江学者，复旦大学新闻学院教授，博士生导师。
1958年8月13日生于北京，幼时求学宁夏、安徽，高中毕业后在安徽下乡插队两年。1982年毕业于北京广播学院（现中国传媒大学）新闻系，1983年赴美求学，获斯坦福大学传播学硕士、威斯康星大学传播学博士，曾在北京大学做博士后。先后在美国康奈尔大学、宾夕法尼亚大学、香港中文大学任教，现任美国威斯康星大学传播艺术系教授。
