{"id":123141,"date":"2011-08-09T14:47:19","date_gmt":"2011-08-09T21:47:19","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/chinadigitaltimes.net\/?p=123141"},"modified":"2011-08-09T14:47:19","modified_gmt":"2011-08-09T21:47:19","slug":"china-sets-bees-on-american-immigrants","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/chinadigitaltimes.net\/2011\/08\/china-sets-bees-on-american-immigrants\/","title":{"rendered":"China Sets Bees on American Immigrants"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Northern Chinese forestry authorities <a href=\"http:\/\/news.xinhuanet.com\/english2010\/china\/2011-08\/08\/c_131036316.htm\"><strong>released over half a billion bees in order to suppress a destructive plague of American moths<\/strong><\/a>, according to Xinhua:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>Forestry authorities in north China&#8217;s city of Baoding released 600 million bees this month to kill off American white moths, which have plagued large areas of crops and forests &#8230;.<\/p>\n<p>The bees use their stingers to bore into white moths&#8217; pupa and kill their larvae. The bees have been previously used to eliminate moth infestations in the provinces of Hebei and Shandong.<\/p>\n<p>Known as the &#8220;forest locust,&#8221; the moths can destroy more than 300 plants and consume the leaves of two hectares&#8217; worth of poplar trees within two days.<\/p>\n<p>According to the State Forestry Administration, the pest has threatened plants and crops in Beijing, Tianjin, Shaanxi, Hebei and Shandong since it was first detected in Liaoning Province in 1979.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.china.org.cn\/english\/environment\/172530.htm\">Parasites have also been used<\/a> in the past as a natural means of controlling the moths.
