{"id":123761,"date":"2011-09-03T21:46:12","date_gmt":"2011-09-04T04:46:12","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/chinadigitaltimes.net\/?p=123761"},"modified":"2011-09-03T21:46:12","modified_gmt":"2011-09-04T04:46:12","slug":"propaganda-bureau-takes-control-of-two-beijing-newspapers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/chinadigitaltimes.net\/2011\/09\/propaganda-bureau-takes-control-of-two-beijing-newspapers\/","title":{"rendered":"Propaganda Bureau Takes Control of Two Beijing Newspapers"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Earlier this week, CDT reported on <a href=\"http:\/\/chinadigitaltimes.net\/2011\/09\/beijing-news-and-beijing-times-are-banned-search-terms-on-weibo\/\">rumors that two major Beijing newspapers, Beijing News and Beijing Times, had been moved<\/a> under the direct authority of the Beijing Propaganda Department. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.guardian.co.uk\/world\/2011\/sep\/03\/chinese-propaganda-bureau-beijing-newspapers?CMP=twt_gu\"><strong>As the Guardian reports, the rumors have been confirmed<\/strong><\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\nOfficials announced the move to reporters on the Beijing Times and the Beijing News \u2013 known for its bold reporting \u2013 at meetings on Friday afternoon.<\/p>\n<p>Some journalists blamed the development on official anger at the reporting of the fatal high-speed train crash in Wenzhou in July, although others believe it reflects a broader struggle over control of the media.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It means there will be so much we can&#8217;t do,&#8221; an employee of one of the affected titles said. &#8220;[Before] there was news that other papers couldn&#8217;t do but we could.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Searches for Beijing News and Beijing Times on Sina&#8217;s popular microblogging service appeared to be blocked. One journalist who posted about the change received a message from the service ordering him to delete the post or lose his account.<\/p>\n<p>Previously, the papers were overseen by state level propaganda authorities.
