{"id":141134,"date":"2012-08-02T15:55:03","date_gmt":"2012-08-02T22:55:03","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/chinadigitaltimes.net\/?p=141134"},"modified":"2012-08-02T15:56:00","modified_gmt":"2012-08-02T22:56:00","slug":"ramadan-celebrations-off-limits-in-xinjiang","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/chinadigitaltimes.net\/2012\/08\/ramadan-celebrations-off-limits-in-xinjiang\/","title":{"rendered":"Ramadan Celebrations Off Limits In Xinjiang"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>As China continues to <a href=\"http:\/\/chinadigitaltimes.net\/2012\/07\/commitment-contract-for-xinjiang-muslims\/\">grow wary of its Muslim population<\/a> amid a <a href=\"http:\/\/chinadigitaltimes.net\/2012\/07\/china-faces-shifting-dynamic-middle-east\/\">shifting dynamic in the Middle East<\/a>, Foreign Policy&#8217;s Alexandra Evans <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.foreignpolicy.com\/posts\/2012\/08\/02\/chinas_ramadan_crackdown_risks_violence\">details the crackdown on Ramadan currently underway in Xinjiang<\/a><\/strong>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Citing the need to &#8220;maint[ain] social stability during the Ramadan period&#8221; the Zonglang township in the Kashgar district issued a statement reminding citizens that &#8220;It is forbidden for Communist Party cadres, civil officials (including those who have retired) and students to participate in Ramadan religious activities.&#8221; Others local governments have urged party leaders to enforce the ban by bringing &#8220;gifts&#8221; of food to local leaders.<\/p>\n<p>Though mosques remain open for prayers, new restrictions have limited services. Foreigners have been banned from entering mosques and Muslims wishing to attend services must first display a national identity card as confirmation of their local residence.
