A July 31 People\u2019s Daily<\/em> overseas edition editorial<\/a> simultaneously called for internal reform and warned against U.S. efforts to undermine China from the grassroots. Netizens have latched on to this passage in particular:<\/p>\n …with \u2018Internet freedom\u2019 as its slogan, they [the Americans] will attack \u2018top down\u2019 governance in order to push forward the traditional model of liberal democracy; through the use of \u2018rights lawyers\u2019, underground religion, dissidents, internet heroes, and disadvantaged social groups as the core forces, they will push for a \u2018bottom-up\u2019 approach to Chinese governance from the grassroots to lay a foundation for changing China…<\/p>\n \u3002\u3002\u3002\u4ee5\u201c\u7f51\u7edc\u81ea\u7531\u201d\u4e3a\u65d7\u53f7\uff0c\u6539\u53d8\u201c\u81ea\u4e0a\u800c\u4e0b\u201d\u63a8\u8fdb\u6c11\u4e3b\u81ea\u7531\u7684\u4f20\u7edf\u6a21\u5f0f\uff0c\u4ee5\u7ef4\u6743\u5f8b\u5e08\u3001\u5730\u4e0b\u5b97\u6559\u3001\u5f02\u89c1\u4eba\u58eb\u3001\u7f51\u7edc\u9886\u8896\u3001\u5f31\u52bf\u7fa4\u4f53\u4e3a\u6838\u5fc3\uff0c\u4ee5\u671f\u901a\u8fc7\u201c\u81ea\u4e0b\u800c\u4e0a\u201d\u7684\u65b9\u5f0f\u6e17\u900f\u4e2d\u56fd\u57fa\u5c42\uff0c\u4e3a\u4e2d\u56fd\u7684\u201c\u6539\u53d8\u201d\u521b\u9020\u6761\u4ef6\u3002\u3002\u3002<\/p><\/blockquote>\n China\u2019s \u201crights lawyers<\/a><\/strong>,\u201d people like Chen Guangcheng and Si Weijiang, struggle under a system that at best selectively enforces rule of law.<\/p>\n Cui Weiping, an outspoken professor at the Beijing Film Academy, gave an especially piquant retort to this editorial on Weibo:<\/p>\n BeijingCuiWeiping<\/strong>: Everyone can relate to at least one of these: \u201crights lawyers, underground religion, dissidents, internet heroes, and disadvantaged social groups.\u201d Others have compared the article\u2019s list of five bad influences to the five black categories<\/a><\/strong> of the Cultural Revolution:<\/p>\n GuoOldStudent<\/strong>: The old five black categories: land owners, the rich, anti-revolutionaries, bad elements, rightists. The new five black categories: rights lawyers, underground religion, dissidents, internet heroes, and disadvantaged social groups.<\/p>\n \u90ed\u8001\u5b66\u5f92: \u8001\u9ed1\u4e94\u7c7b\uff1a\u5730\u3001\u5bcc\u3001\u53cd\u3001\u574f\u3001\u53f3\u3002\u65b0\u9ed1\u4e94\u7c7b\uff1a\u7ef4\u3001\u6559\u3001\u5f02\u3001\u7f51\u3001\u5f31\u3002<\/p>\n LittleKe<\/strong>: First comes family, then country, then everything else. Average Chinese are just trying to get by in their daily lives. They won\u2019t be able to help the country until their own situation is stable, and after that they\u2019ll naturally consider everything else. The people of Shifang and Qidong are doing just that: protecting their own. They\u2019re perfectly capable of protecting the interests of the country.
